HMM with the services of Vaisala, has installed two weather monitoring stations
on the network which provide dedicated weather forecasting services. Based on
this, informed decisions can be taken to predict the risk of ice and snow forming
on the motorway so that gritting can be programmed to reduce the risk of
accidents.
Winter Maintenance commences in October through to March and HMM uses five
gritters specially designed for motorway work. These gritters range in sizes from
2m³ to 14m³ of salt capacity and in severe conditions can remain out on the Project
Road spreading and snow clearing for long periods before refilling. HMM uses the
specialised Ice Stations on the Project Road to record weather conditions and employs
the Meteorological Office for Winter Forecasting services and thermal mapping for
information on gritting routes and spread rates.
