HMM operates and maintains 60km of the most trafficked part of Northern Ireland’s motorway network from Sprucefield on the M1 through the Westlink, M3, M5, A8 (M) and the M2 through to the M22 .  HMM provides a service to contractors for Temporary Traffic Management (TTM), gully emptying, sweeping, winter gritting and other duties, to cover all aspects of road operation & maintenance.

HMM provides a dedicated 24/7 emergency telephone number to respond to all public enquiries and requests regarding road maintenance and emergencies on all projects in which they are involved. (PHONE 24/7 - 028 90 46 76 04) HMM also carries out emergency closures, clears accident debris and reopens roads when considered safe to do so. Environment issues such as oil spills are treated using bowsers modified for motorway work and specialised teams are available on a call out basis if major events occur.

All HMM staff have undergone specialised training for Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) under the National Highway Sector Scheme for Chapter 8 Types A, B, C and D. They have also undergone training for miscellaneous duties including Winter Maintenance.

Items of specialised equipment range from impact protection vehicles, pickups, stainless steel gritters (2m³- 14m³), loading shovel, oil spill treatment bowsers, mobile variable message signs and many other items of small specialised plant for street lighting maintenance, barrier repairs and general maintenance of roads.
